Presidents Day is a day where we all honor and reflect on the leading men of our great country. We are obliged to honor all of our past Commanders in Chief but, we have a special place “Deep in the Heart of Texas” for a few of our great nation’s leaders.

We are lucky to have THREE past Presidents as native Texans. AND each had a hand in bettering the country we call home. Here are some of our favorite facts you probably didn’t know about our past Texan Presidents:

Lyndon B. Johnson

  • The 1st Texas President
  • Vice President of John F. Kennedy before he was assassinated
  • From Stonewall, Texas
  • Grew up in a farmhouse
  • First profession was as a school teacher
  • Was nearly killed in WWII by deciding to board a different flight, missing the plane that later crashed with no survivors
  • Signed the Civil Rights Act into law
  • He, his wife, and their 2 daughters all have the initials “LBJ”

George H. W. Bush

  • Born in Massachusetts
  • Known for his funky sock collection
  • Captain of the Yale University baseball team and played in the 1st two College World Series.
  • In July 2013 he shaved his head to honor the son of one of his Secret Service agents who was suffering from leukemia
  • He was Youngest pilot in the Navy in 1943
  • Celebrated his 75th birthday by going skydiving. 5 years later he did it again, and 5 years after that – at 85!
  • He placed a Broccoli ban aboard Air Force One during his presidency

  • Born in Connecticut
  • Only president to earn an MBA
  • His 2002 State of the Union address was the 1st to be live broadcast on the internet
  • Was an F-102 Fighter Pilot
  • He met his wife Laura at a summer BBQ
  • Part owner of Texas Rangers Baseball team
  • 43rd president of the United States
  • His Presidential Library can be found at Southern Methodist University

What an impressive bunch we get to claim from the Lone Star state.
